The United States grows almost no coffee, so retail prices track the global market for green (unroasted) beans. Those world prices are set largely by weather in a handful of big producing countries — frost and drought in Brazil, the largest grower of arabica, and conditions in Vietnam, the largest grower of robusta, can move them sharply. Shipping costs and the dollar’s exchange rate add further swings before beans are roasted and packed domestically.
